Presents the history of Japanese mass culture during the decades preceding Pearl Harbor. This work argues that the new gestures, relationship, and humor of ero-guro-nansensu (erotic grotesque nonsense) expressed a self-consciously modern ethos that challenged state ideology and expansionism
