Artificial Intelligence Month

This month, we celebrate the rapid evolution and growing impact of Artificial Intelligence across education, research, and innovation. From enhancing academic discovery to transforming how we learn and work, AI continues to shape the future in powerful ways.

In Kazakhstan, 2026 has been declared the Year of Artificial Intelligence and Digitalization, underscoring the country’s commitment to innovation and technological advancement. In this context, our tribute to Artificial Intelligence Month highlights key developments, resources, and initiatives that reflect both national priorities and the global influence of AI in advancing knowledge and discovery.

At Nazarbayev University, there are a couple of initiatives organized towards the development of AI. Among such is the Institute of Smart Systems and Artificial Intelligence (ISSAI), established in 2019, is a leading research center driving AI innovation and technological development in Kazakhstan. The Institute conducts interdisciplinary research in machine intelligence, addressing real-world challenges across industry, government, and society.

ISSAI is also the developer of advanced generative AI systems such as Oylan, Beynele, TilSync, and MangiSoz, with a strong emphasis on multilingual capabilities and Kazakh-language technologies. With over 120 scientific publications and active international collaborations, ISSAI plays a key role in strengthening the country’s research ecosystem and supporting Kazakhstan’s vision of becoming a regional leader in Artificial Intelligence.

In addition to research, Nazarbayev University actively promotes collaboration with international partners, industry, and government institutions, fostering innovation and supporting the practical implementation of AI technologies. Through projects ranging from healthcare and smart cities to language technologies and robotics, the university plays a key role in advancing AI-driven solutions that address societal and economic challenges.

Library Interviews
In this section, Dr. Mariza Tsakalerou, an Associate Professor at Nazarbayev University and Director of the Master of Engineering Management Programs, shares her reflections and insights on her engagement with Artificial Intelligence.

She is currently leading a Collaborative Research Program (CRP) grant for 2026–2028 for the project “Human-AI Collaboration and Creative Problem-Solving: Developing Evidence-Based Frameworks for Human Capacity Development.”

The project investigates how generative AI influences creativity, divergent thinking, and
learning processes, and aims to develop evidence-based frameworks that support
responsible AI use while preserving independent thinking and human creativity.
“AI will make knowledge production more collaborative, iterative, and rapid. Researchers will increasingly work with AI to explore ideas, test alternatives, and synthesize literature.”
Dr. Mariza Tsakalerou
Associate Professor and Director of the Master of Engineering Management Programs at NU

AI Tools for Literature Reviews
Below are some of the suggested AI-tools that allows generative AI to ingest information from reliable sources of information to create contextually relevant, timely, and more accurate responses. Check out more information via this LibGuide.
An AI-powered research engine that helps you quickly search, screen, extract, and synthesize evidence from scientific literature, turning what would take weeks into hours by organizing findings and supporting evidence in a structured way. It’s designed to speed up the early stages of a literature review while maintaining scholarly transparency and rigor.

An AI research assistant that helps you find, understand, and analyze academic papers by offering features like semantic search, Chat-with-PDF, explanations of complex content, and tools for summarizing and organizing literature. It streamlines literature discovery and comprehension, though users should still fact-check AI-generated summaries carefully.

An AI research assistant that conducts deep, adaptive literature searches by reading and evaluating hundreds or thousands of papers, following citation trails, and generating relevance-scored insights, acting like an expert colleague doing research for you. It’s especially useful for exploring complex or niche research areas, though it may take longer to produce results compared with simpler tools.

A virtual assistant for research and text from Google, created with artificial intelligence.
Unlike conventional chat bots, it works on a "grounding" basis: AI analyzes only the documents you have uploaded and answers questions based solely on them. This minimizes the risk of "hallucinations".

AI in Publishing: Let’s Learn Together
As generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini become more common in research, major publishers are setting new rules so that work remains honest and transparent.
What Are We Learning About Publisher Rules?
Most major publishers, including ACM, Elsevier, Springer Nature, and Taylor & Francis, have now released clear "rules of the road" for using AI in your work:
  • Humans are the Only Authors: AI tools cannot be listed as authors or co-authors. This is because authorship requires legal and ethical accountability, which a machine cannot provide.
  • Transparency is Key: If you use AI to help write, code, or analyze data, you must disclose it. Usually, this is done in the Acknowledgments or Methods section.
  • You Are Responsible: Even if an AI tool makes a mistake or "hallucinates" a fake citation, you, the human author, are fully accountable for the accuracy and integrity of the final paper.
  • Image Restrictions: Many publishers, such as Springer Nature and Elsevier, currently prohibit using AI to create or change research images and figures.
Privacy Matters: Be careful about what you "chat" with AI. Most tools use your inputs to train their models, which could put your unpublished research or private data at risk.
How Can We Support You?
As we all navigate these new technologies, the library research support staff is here to act as a partner in your research journey. While we are learning about these tools just like you, we can assist by:
  • Exploring Policies Together: If you are unsure about a specific journal's stance (such as MDPI's transparency requirements or Sage's disclosure templates), we can help you find and look through their latest guidelines.
  • Sharing Disclosure Examples: We are collecting examples of how other researchers are wording their AI declarations so you don't have to start from scratch when drafting your own.
  • Staying Updated on Ethics: We are following updates from the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and other industry leaders. We can point you toward their newest resources on the ethical use of AI.
  • Finding Reliable Resources: As we discover new guides or tools for checking AI accuracy and data privacy, we will share those findings with the community to help everyone publish with confidence.
Have a question or want to share what you've learned? Contact library@nu.edu.kz. We are here to help you find the right information as we all adapt to this evolving landscape.
Database Updates
CAS Newton is an intelligent scientific AI assistant integrated into CAS SciFinder, designed to accelerate discovery and support R&D workflows. It is built on the CAS Content Collection™ - a unique dataset covering more than 150 years of curated, interconnected scientific knowledge across chemistry, biology, materials science, and intellectual property, setting a new standard for research.
A key advantage is its interactive, conversational search experience. You can engage with CAS Newton through a chat interface, refining queries step by step and exploring results dynamically. This allows you to uncover insights that previously required multiple searches, filters, and manual analysis.
CAS Newton supports natural language queries (including in Russian), delivers concise summaries with references to trusted scientific literature, and helps extract insights from large volumes of information.
At the same time, your data remains secure: all interactions are handled within a protected CAS environment, your queries are not shared, and your data is not used to train AI models.
Overall, CAS Newton provides researchers and R&D leaders with a practical way to innovate faster without compromising trust.
