  • To Identify the source of the information
  • Credit the author of information that isn't yours
  • Avoid plagiarism
  • For others to determine the information authority, accuracy, and purpose

Academic Misconduct

Cite so your reader knows your work is not

  • Fabricated - data or results are made up
  • Falsified -  research materials or processes aren't accurately represented
  • Plagiarized - Another's ideas, processes, results, or words are not cited

Penalties for Academic Misconduct

Your university and professional reputation are important

  • Failing the assignment or course
  • Reprimand in your permanent file
  • Dismissal from the University

 

Plagiarism

Defined in the NU Academic Misconduct Policy Statement:

"Is intentionally or carelessly presenting the work of another as one's own. It includes submitting an assignment purporting to be the student's original work which has wholly or in part been created by another person. It also includes the presentation of the work, ideas, representations or words of another person without customary and proper acknowledgement of sources."
