NU Library Newsletter
Fall Semester:
September 2026
We’re excited to share the October 2026 edition of our Library Newsletter, dedicated to Global Media and Information Literacy Week and International Open Access Week. This issue explores the importance of navigating information critically, promoting open knowledge, and discovering library resources, services, and tools to support your learning, teaching, and research.
Celebrating the Global Media and Information Literacy Week and International Open Access Week
In October, NU Library celebrated Global Media and Information Literacy Week and International Open Access Week, highlighting the importance of critical thinking, responsible information use, and equitable access to knowledge. Through dedicated LibGuides, research support sessions, publisher webinars, curated book exhibitions, and educational resources, the Library encouraged the university community to develop essential information literacy skills, explore open access publishing, and discover new ways to access, evaluate, and share scholarly knowledge. These initiatives reaffirmed NU Library’s commitment to fostering informed learning, supporting research, and promoting open and inclusive knowledge sharing.

Library Interview
Bridget Goodman is an Associate Professor at the NU Graduate School of Education, where she coordinates the MA in Multilingual Education program and serves as the School's Library Liaison. Her research, teaching, and supervision interests focus on multilingual education, translanguaging, and language policy, with particular attention to English-medium education in Eurasia and Central Asia, the use of multiple languages in and beyond the classroom, and the intersections of language and race in Kazakhstan and beyond.
To mark the Day of Languages of the Peoples of Kazakhstan, we asked her about multilingualism as a resource rather than a barrier in higher education.

*Interview conducted by Venera Niyazbayeva, TLSO.
“It starts with teachers', staff members', and administrators' belief system. They need to be encouraged to see their own multilingualism and the multilingual backgrounds of their students as an advantage and a resource.”

NU Library introduced the university community to ClinicalKey Nursing AI, Elsevier’s evidence-based resources designed to support nursing education and clinical practice. The trial access, launched on October 12, provided an opportunity to explore reliable nursing information, including clinical procedures, drug information, and full-text resources. ClinicalKey Nursing AI offers an additional way to find relevant information quickly by allowing users to ask clinical questions in natural language and receive concise AI-generated answers with links to supporting sources. The platform also features intuitive navigation and access to previous queries, helping users revisit information and streamline their research.
The resource has been added to the A-Z List.

LibGuides about Media and Information Literacy Week and Open Access Week
To mark International Open Access Week 2026, NU Library highlights its Open Access Week LibGuide, a resource dedicated to promoting open access and sustainable scholarly communication. The guide introduces the principles and benefits of open access, explaining how removing subscription barriers can make research more accessible, discoverable, widely read, and cited. It also provides information about Nazarbayev University’s Open Access Policy, highlights the role of open access in increasing the visibility and societal impact of research, and features a curated collection of books on open access publishing, institutional repositories, and scholarly communication. The guide serves as a useful starting point for students, faculty, and researchers interested in exploring open access and learning how to make scholarly knowledge more widely available.

Explore the LibGuide
In recognition of Global Media and Information Literacy Week 2026, NU Library highlighted its Media and Information Literacy (MIL) LibGuide, a resource designed to help the university community navigate today’s complex information landscape. The guide introduces the principles of media and information literacy, emphasizing the importance of critically evaluating sources, identifying misinformation, understanding how information is created and shared, and using media and digital technologies responsibly. It also encourages ethical information practices, critical thinking, and respectful engagement with diverse perspectives. By providing a foundation for developing these essential competencies, the guide supports students, faculty, and staff in becoming more informed, responsible, and confident users of information.

NU Library highlighted its Basic Medical Fact-Checking LibGuide, a resource designed to help students and researchers navigate health-related information and assess the reliability of medical claims. The guide emphasizes the importance of evaluating sources critically, distinguishing evidence-based medical information from misinformation, and verifying health claims before accepting or sharing them. By encouraging informed and responsible use of medical information, it supports the development of essential media and information literacy skills, particularly when navigating the vast amount of health content available online.

Spotlight on NU Scholarship
Another Open Access article has been published by a Master student in Public Health Alpamys Shaldarbek together with School of Medicine Professors - Dr. Joseph Almazan and Dr. Ejercito Mangawa Balay-odao in the Journal of Nursing Management - “Nurses’ Roles in Supporting Mental Health Among Preoperative Cardiac Patients in Kazakhstan”, shows how nurses help patients cope with anxiety, depression, and fear before heart surgery. The study shows that empathetic conversation, clear information sharing, and even storytelling are powerful strategies to ease distress, while cultural stigma and limited training remain challenges. Thanks to the library’s transformative agreement, the Article Processing Charges (APC) was fully covered, so that this important research is freely accessible worldwide. This is just one example of how our research support librarians can help the NU community publish openly, manage APC coverage, and increase the visibility of NU scholarship.
Library Research Support Services
Library Research Support Office helps guide our NU community through the entire research lifecycle - from searching relevant resources to refine your topic, to selecting appropriate journals for publishing, and navigating the publishing process.
Library Highlights & Events
NU Librarians have co-authored a feature article published in Times Higher Education Campus+ on how university libraries can better support researchers in navigating the open research landscape. The article, “Why librarians should organise open research support around researchers, not services,” explores how libraries can make research support more accessible by organising guidance around the questions and decisions researchers face throughout the research lifecycle, rather than around individual library services.

The article was authored by Asemgul Temirkhanova, Library Director; Yelizaveta Kamilova, Head of the Library Research Support Office; and Research Librarians Lazzat Arystanova and Ainash Yeleussizova.
