At the recent NU Annual Research Conference 2024: Shaping the Future of Research in Kazakhstan: Working Together for Success, our team from the Teaching & Learning Support Office took part in the poster exhibition, presenting their impactful study that reflects on undergraduate research through the lens of library instructional and reference support. The study highlights the critical role librarians play in shaping future researchers, experts, and scientists, fostering their academic growth and success.
Through the NU Library Information Literacy (NU LILY) Program, librarians directly support students by cultivating essential research skills. This program is designed to meet learners at their level, guiding them from basic information searching and assignment writing to more complex tasks, such as citation management and publishing. Complementing NU LILY, librarians also offer personalized reference and consultation services at any point in a student's learning journey, acting as research partners and mentors.
The recent revision of the Information Literacy program has led to a marked increase in interest from faculty, with more requests for embedded library instruction sessions being received. This further emphasizes the pivotal role that library-led instruction plays in academic activities — from answering simple assignment questions to addressing complex research issues related to citation and publishing.
As the study presented at the conference indicates, a stronger collaboration between faculty and librarians is key to ensuring student success. Together, they help foster critical thinking and lifelong learning skills, empowering students to uphold the ideals of academic integrity and thrive in their research endeavours.
NU Librarians remain dedicated to supporting students at every step of their academic journey, demonstrating that the library is more than just a resource — it is a vital partner in academic achievement.
This study was highly recognized by conference organizers and participants.
