NU Library Newsletter
Fall Semester, October 2024

Hello everyone!

We are pleased to present the autumn issue of our library newsletter. In this edition, we highlight major campaigns supported by the Library, such as Global Media and Information Literacy Week and Open Access Week, as well as upcoming pen library sessions and workshops.

You will also find information on essential resources for your studies and research, along with other support and services offered by the NU Library.

Please note our standard operating hours: weekdays from 8:30 AM to 9:45 PM, and weekends from 11:00 AM to 7:45 PM.

Some of our favourite book quotes this season

“If we knew what we were doing, it would not be called research, would it?”
— Albert Einstein
“It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts.”
— Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes

Book Recommendations: First-Year Students’ Must-Read
Whether you're just starting your university experience or simply looking for an inspiring read, Simon Sinek's Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action is essential.

Sinek encourages students to:
“Use your time there to learn more than the subjects you choose to study. Learn to make decisions. Learn to take accountability for those decisions. Learn how to disagree with others in a way they will hear you. Learn how to make the people with whom you disagree feel heard. And most importantly, learn how to be a good friend—the kind of person people want to come to when they are struggling and, even more important, the kind of person people want to call or text when something great happens in their life.”

Mindset: The New Psychology of Success by Carol Dweck

During your time at NU, remember that embracing a growth mindset will help you thrive not only academically but also through some of the most challenging moments in your life.

Carol Dweck explains:
“The passion for stretching yourself and sticking to it, even (or especially) when it’s not going well, is the hallmark of the growth mindset. This is the mindset that allows people to thrive during some of the most challenging times in their lives.”
So keep pushing your boundaries, embracing challenges, and staying resilient. Your journey starts now—make the most of it!

What’s On:

From October 21 to 24, 2024, the NU Library celebrated Open Access Week with a series of engaging events centered around this year’s theme: "Community Over Commercialization." Our goal is to emphasize the benefits of open access and transformative agreements while encouraging collaboration among students, faculty, and publishers.

Throughout the week, NU members had the opportunity to learn from librarians, faculty, researchers, and invited experts as they shared valuable resources, experiences, ideas, and success stories in research dissemination and academic publishing.

We are pleased to invite all NU members to continue the celebration of Global Media and Information Literacy Week 2024. This year’s theme, “The New Digital Frontiers of Information: Media and Information Literacy for Public-Interest Information,” focuses on the vital role of media and information literacy (MIL) in navigating the evolving digital landscape. Join us as we explore how MIL can create a safer, more inclusive, and empowering digital future for all.

Visit our special book display on the 2nd floor of the Main Library, and explore print and digital resources to enhance your skills in evaluating public-interest information online. Don’t miss the exciting 7th Library InfoLit Race Challenge this Thursday to strengthen your information literacy skills!

Join us this Thursday — open to all NU members!

Join the 7th InfoLitRace 2024 on October 31 at the Library to test your information literacy and critical thinking skills with a team of 3-5 members for a chance to earn the NU Critical Thinking Giant status!
