History of the Library

The NU Library was established in September 2010.

Since then, it has evolved into the center of intellectual life at the university, continually expanding its resources and services to support the academic and research needs of students, faculty, and staff.

The Library Teaching & Learning Support Office has been established (formerly the Reference Office).

The NU Library switched to Alma and Primo, a new library platform replacing the existing library catalog, on June 7th, 2023. Primo, the discovery interface for Alma, is a modern solution that uses cloud-based technology and offers a responsive web and mobile design. With Primo, users can conveniently explore the library, whether on or off campus, using their desktop or mobile device with internet access. This platform has greatly improved the user experience.

The Library team was recognized for winning the 2023 NU Teaching Award for Sharing NU Experience.

The Library Research Support Office has been established, evolving from the former Digital Office.

The Virtual Assistant NURIA (Nazarbayev University Reference and Information Assistant) has been introduced to provide accurate and reliable answers to library-related questions quickly.

The opening of the ASEAN Book Corner was marked by an official ribbon-cutting ceremony. The event was jointly led by His Excellency Dr. Mochamad Fadjroel Rachman (Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to the Republic of Kazakhstan), His Excellency Dato’ Syed Mohamad Bakri bin Syed Abd Rahman (Ambassador of Malaysia to the Republic of Kazakhstan), Her Excellency PHAM Thai Nhu Mai (Ambassador of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to the Republic of Kazakhstan), and Dr. Orathai Phubunlap Gunaseelan (Chargé d'affaires, A.I. of the Royal Thai Embassy in the Republic of Kazakhstan).

The Social Development Fund grant was received for MIL projects.

The Virtual Library InfoLit Race Challenge received a prestigious American Library Association (ALA) Presidential Citation for Innovative International Projects. The award was presented by the American Library Association (ALA).

The first online Eurasian Academic Libraries Conference (EALC).

The second NU Library SDG Story was published in the IFLA Library Map of the World.

Book sanitizer and sterilization machines are used for the quick disinfection of books in reading rooms.

The first NU Library story is featured on the IFLA Story Map of the World.

The Open Access Policy has been approved by the Academic Council to encourage the university community to support open and sustainable scholarly communication.

A portable information induction system, “Istok A2,” for communication with users with hearing impairments and a workstation for users with motor impairments have been purchased.

A Relax Room has been designated as a rest area at night for graduate and PhD students.

A library staff member is participating in the development of the NU Concept for creating conditions for people with disabilities and special needs.

Opening of the Medical School Library

The SpringShare application LibAnswers has been implemented for the Ask a Librarian service. Additionally, the Make an Appointment service has been introduced.

The Week of Women is being held in partnership with GenCon.

The First School of Library Technologies – a week-long seminar focused on the professional development of staff in academic libraries.

ArtLit I – an art project dedicated to the beauty of the pursuit of perfection in the “human reader (Homo Legens)” and the search for inner harmony between the images of the past and present, as represented in paintings and photographs.

May: The first Human Library was launched at the library.

The Library of Congress Classification System has been implemented to organize the book collection, replacing the Universal Decimal Classification System.

EBSCO Discovery Service is used as a single search platform for electronic resources.

The University Repository website has been created, and the regulatory documents have been approved.

ProQuest’s Summon discovery tool has been implemented.

The first issue of the NU Library Digest has been published. This regular news digest, featuring updates for users and overviews of changes, new resources, and services, was distributed until 2016.

The first training session for Kazakhstani librarians was conducted, marking the beginning of our experience-sharing program.

The Library becomes a member of the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA).

The Digital Center is established.

The Library joins the Association of University Libraries of Kazakhstan.

The first collection of microfiches on "Central Asia" arrives.

The interlibrary loan (ILL) service is launched for the NU community.

LibGuides are introduced to help you start research, answer questions, or find resources on a particular subject or course of study.

The Monorail Transport System (MTS) for transferring books between library departments has been implemented.

The "Ask-a-Librarian" service was launched.

The first scanner for digitizing books has arrived.

The annual event "The Library Roadshow" was launched. This traditional event showcases the library’s resources, services, statistics, and projects to the NU community.
